NAGLIAI STRICT NATURE RESERVE

Nagliai Strict Nature Reserve covers an area of 1680 ha. It is 9 km long and lies between Juodkrante and Pervalka.

The most significant in the reserve are the Grey (Dead) Dunes, which are covered with grass vegetation. Underneath are places of old villages that were buried by drifting sand, naturally grown forest and ancient forest soils. In places where the wind blew out deep hollows, the cultural strata of old settlements and buried forest soils can be seen.

This reserve is a sanctuary for a number of species, which are included in the Red List: herbs - seaside centaury (Centaurium littorale, Gilmour), sea-holly (Eryngium maritimum L.), lesser twayblade (Listera cordata L.), shining crane's-bill (Geranium lucidum L.); fungus (Pycnoporus cinnabarinus (Jacq.: Fr.) P.Karst) and pig's ears fungi (Peziza ammophila Dur. et Mont.); insects - striped earwig (Labidura riparia Pall), pine chafer (Polyphylla fullo) and coastal tiger-beetle (Cicindela maritima Dej.); molluscs (Limax maximus L.), birds - tawny pipit (Anthus campestris L.), ringed plower (Charadrius hiaticula) and shelduck (Tadorna tadorna L.). The white-tailed eagle (Haliaëtus, albicilla L.) is frequent visitor there too.

Any human activity, including recreation, is prohibited in the reserve. Nature is preserved for scientific purposes to study natural processes in dune ecosystems.

For visitors who would like to enjoy the dune landscapes, the National Park Authority constructed a trail. It starts at the parking place on the 31-st kilometre of the Smiltyne-Nida road and leads over the dunes to the lagoon side.

GROBSTAS STRICT NATURE RESERVE

This area of the strict nature reserve covers 170 ha.
It is surrounded by the Parnidis Landscape Reserve from one side and the state border with Russia's Kaliningrad Region on the other.
This reserve features unique landscape of aesthetic value. It covers the great dune ridge with drifting sand, the place of old Nida village, which was buried under moving sand. The highest dune in the spit - the Gliders' Dune - was 70 m high, but recently dropped to 50 m.

Grobstas Nature Reserve is an important habitat for rare species that are included in the Red List of Lithuania. Sea-holly (Eryngium maritimum L.), water purslane (Peplis portula L.), seaside centaury (Centaurium littorale, Gilmour) and dark-red helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens (Hoffm.) Besser) grow there. It is the nesting place for white-tailed eagle (Haliaëtus albicilla L.) and shelduck (Tadorna tadorna L.). The natterjack (Bufo calamita) can be found here also.
