LANDSCAPE / Great Dune Ridge

The Great Dune Ridge is a picturesque shape of the Curonian Spit terrain. These are the sands which captured the forests, settlements and old parabolic dunes of the Spit. This forming process of new dunes began in the 16th century when a natural obstacle such as forest had been gradually destroyed.

Main dunes started shaping at the seaside where the sea continually cast new sand masses ashore. Dried sand grains are rolled by the wind and all sand masses start moving downwind. The wind is rolling only big and heavy grains, however small and light ones are moved up in the air and thrown over several meters. The bigger amount of sand flies over the ground surface at the layer of about 20 cm high.

At the beginning the sand was accumulating into knolls which eventually merged into increasing chains of dunes. Meeting with no resistance on the way these sand masses moved rapidly towards the lagoon shaping the capes at those areas where the path was open. At some other places they accumulated into 30-40 m high dunes, the movement of which is caused by dune physical properties. Upwind slope of a hill is always longer and more inclined, its inclination angle does not exceed 100, and downwind slope is narrow, steep, inclination angle is 300 400. Upwind slope sand got packed and slope surface itself is not spongy, however the sand at downslope is loose, slope surface is spongy. Such flow of sand from upwind slope to downslope is a reason of entire dune movement. Dune movement direction and velocity depends on direction and strength of prevailing winds. Dune movement rate in the Curonian Spit is approx. 15 m/year.

Tourists may enjoy the main dune massif at Parnidis Landscape Reserve located in the North of Nida. Parnidis Dune is the best point for sight-seeing. The Reserve involves aesthetically valuable landscape where the dune ridge with mountain pines in the northern side and with drifting sand in the South is highlighted.  This is the only place of the National Park with the remaining chain of drifting dunes so far. The view of drifting dunes located in Grobštas Nature Reserve opens towards the south of Parnidis Dune and even the area of dunes at the Russian Federation can be seen in case of clear visibility. People are allowed visiting the area of Parnidis Landscape Reserve only, however it is prohibited to cross its boundary.
