News / OPEN-AIR REED SCULPTURES EXPOSITION ON THE AMBER BAY AND THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX on 22 September 2018
2018-06-20
It is already more than 10 years when reed sculptures became an important part of the Curonian Spit local culture. Their creation, open-air exposition and burning already are every-year tradition. During the whole summer season, the Amber Bay is decorated with sculptures which are created by artists from Lithuania and Latvia. The Autumnal Equinox is a cozy and meaningful celebration. On this year it is dedicated to the anniversary of the Restored State of Lithuania. During the Autumnal Equinox the musical-mythological drama "Dūšelės" will be performed by Aistė Smilgevičiūtė and the band "SKYLĖ" . The performance tells the story about the soul’s journey between two worlds: ours and the dead. The drama is inspired by the concept of the ancient Lithuanian life and the ulterior world, also by the burial customs and their reflection in folk songs, tales and mythology.
In 1923 the Curonian Spit was included in the jurisdiction of Lithuania for the first time. Little by little not only German tourists but also Lithuanians started to travel here . The Curonian Spit gradually turned from fishermen village to a tourist destination. We asked the authors to commemorate the Interwar Lithuania’s history and look for the links between it and the ancient Balt symbols. The theme of this symposium – "Transformation“.
